In the 16th century, this coastal city became a principal port of entry for millions of African slaves brought to Brazil, the country that received the most Africans of all countries in the New World. By some estimates, Brazil received about 38% of all Africans shipped to the Americas, with all Caribbean islands combined receiving 47% and the United States about 4.5%.
